Video Cutdowns: Best Practices

Here are a few best practices to create stronger video cutdowns.

1. Start with the audience

Ask yourself one question:

Who will be watching this video?

Cold audience
Introduce the problem, your product, and why it matters.

Warm audience
Focus on your strongest features, product UI, and customer outcomes.

Existing customers
Highlight new features, product updates, or educational content.

2. Include the core elements

Most cutdowns include a combination of these:

  • Hook

  • Product introduction

  • Feature highlight

  • Social proof

  • Call to action

Not every cutdown needs all five. Keep only what supports the goal of the video.

3. Focus on one message

The best cutdowns don't try to tell the entire story.

Instead, ask:

What's the one thing I want viewers to remember?

Everything else is secondary.

4. Mark up the strongest moments

If you'd like to review the cutdowns yourself, simply leave comments around the moments you'd like to keep.

It doesn't need to be exact. Rough timestamps are perfectly fine.

We'll handle the editing from there.

No problem. We're happy to create the first draft based on your audience and goals. From there, we'll refine it together until it feels right.
